7th period, 9/15

Class: Today, 9/15, we took notes in class at the beginning from Mrs. Stein about population growth curves and limiting factors. Then we ripped out Lab 58 (pg. 355-361) from our gray science books that we keep in our cubbies and returned the book to where we got them from. After that she gave us time to start UP 43-45 and answer any questions we had becuase today was the day before the quiz.

Notes: Population growth curves: A "S" curve is also called a logistic graph. We learned that limiting factors are anything that cause a population to decrease. A Density dependent limiting factor affects larger and more dense populations (exp. food availability, disease, competition, etc.). Density independent factors affect population regardless of density or size (exp. Fire, hurricane, extreme temperature, etc.).

Microscope Lab

SUMMARY- In class of Wednesday, September 1st, We came into class and wrote down the homework. As usual we sat in our seats and Mrs. Stein prompted us on todays activities. Today we had to perform our microscope lab. In this lab we would look at specimens such as pond water, yeast, insects, or paramecium. We spent today trying to get comfortable with our microscopes. We learned the basics of the microscope. After we would observe the specimen we draw our best version of it in our Unit Packet. You can find these pages from pg. 33-37. Overall another fine day in period 7 biology class!

HOMEWORK-finish pages 33-37, and your rip-o-meter write up by september 9th!

In Class: We finished our Rip-O-Meter lab. Along with finishing the lab we completed pages 27-29 in the Unit Packet. Mrs. S will not be coollecting those pages but it is to your benefit that you complete them also the graph on page 28 can and should be a rough draft. What Mrs. S will be collecting is the lab write up the format and the rubric is on pages 31 and 32. THE WRTIE UP DUE DATE HAS CHANGED!!! it was previously due on 9/10 but it is now due on 9/8. The date has changed due to Rosh Hashanah being on 9/09. We also recieved the pre-lab questions and the sixtypes of questions and answers that we turned in the day before be sure to pick those up from Mrs. Stein if you were absent or haven't done so already. If you didn't already start the microscope lab the last pages starting from 33 have to do with the microscope lab so make sure you take a look at them. THERE WILL BE A QUIZ ON THURSDAY!!! The information that will be on the quiz is located on page 1.

Today, we had to turn in our "6 Types of Questions" homework from last week. We went over Olivia's blog, and went over her "Stars and Wishes." Then, we got into our assigned lab groups for our leaf labs. Before we started experimenting our hypotheses, we completed our pre-labs in our unit packet, and we turned them in (pgs. 25-26). Then, if we had enough time, we got started experimenting.
LAB: Our assignment for this lab last week was for one person in each group to bring in leaves. The point of the lab is to test which of two different types of leaves is stronger. We test this by piercing a paperclip into each leaf that is attached to a paper cup. We keep on filling the pennies into the paper cup until the leaf breaks. The leaf that isn't ripped is the stronger one. The more leaves you test, the more accurate your data will be.

Review of Scientific Method

On Friday in class we went over the milk lab we had done the previous day and the homework, which was the Simpson’s Scientific Method Practice Problems.

We reviewed what control groups and independent and dependent variables were. Our teacher, Mrs. Stein, put us into our lab groups for the leaf lab we are about to start. The purpose of the lab is to test the leaves strength.


Our homework for the weekend was to read section 1.1 in our biology text books and do “6 Types of Questions” and answers. If you want a homework pass you have to visit Mrs. Stein in her office, sometime before September 4.

First Two Days of School

Day 1:-Class enjoyed first lab experiment after meeting our new STS Biology teacher Mrs. Stein.


LAB:Four to five people in a group collected data on what happens when you add four drops of food coloring to bowl of milk and put a toothpick in the center of the bowl which is covered in soap.

Day 2:-Class turns in first homework assignment of the school year for Biology.
-Class heard drug and alcohol speech for the seventh time in two days!
-Each person got a laptop so that we could get our moodle accounts set up.
