It's Snowmageddon! A Blizzaster!, The Snowpolalypse!

Hey everyone! Hope you are enjoying your day off! If you are reading this, post something about your snow day!  Maybe a picture of the snow?  So, just a friendly reminder that it would be WONDERFUL if you keep on track with the homework on moodle.. you will not be penalized if you don't, however, your weekend will be bogged down with homework if you don't!  Why am I asking you to do this?

1.  The test is STILL planned for next week (last I hear, still Weds.... but now that tomorrow is cancelled to, not sure if that will be)
2.  The test will STILL cover the same information
3.  You're gonna have to do it anyway!
4.  You'll have less to do over the weekend!

Evolution!

Welcome Back!!!

After getting new seats, we started our new unit on Evolution! Everyone was REALLY excited! We started off by playing a game of written 'telephone' to illustrate how things can change over time.  In the process, we learned that we aren't the best artists! We then brainstormed a little bit about what we already knew about evolution... below is a summary of our brainstorm:
-Change over time
-"we evolved from monkeys"... NOT TRUE!!! we shared a common ancestor with monkeys!
- Darwin is credited for 'natural selection' and 'survival of the fittest'
- Evolution is a THEORY, not a LAW.. but it does have a lot of evidence

We then started a movie about Darwin's voyage.

For Homework... nothing is due tomorrow, however, you need to do a DOUBLE BUBBLE MAP titled "Darwin v. Lamark" using the readings from 16.1, 16.2, and 16.3.  It is due Weds.  Be sure to do a good job of including specifics IN YOUR OWN WORDS! See moodle for help with the format.

Also, come visit Mrs. Stein for a HW pass before next Tuesday!

Hope everyone had a wonderful and restful Winter Break!  The next two weeks is going to FLY by... finals will be here before you know it!  To help get yourself ready for finals, get your materials from your classes organized SOONER than LATER.  Figure out what material is the hardest for you and start there... so you have time to review that material more than once before the exam.  We are going to do one more short unit before finals... we will learn about reproduction and hormones.

Alrighty... so i am getting to the bottom of the scribe list debacle... BE SURE YOU TAG YOUR SCRIBE POSTS correctly... I can keep track much easier of who has scribed if you do so... So, I am scribe!

Soooo.... class Friday was REALLY awesome. As always... we went over the answers to the dihybrid crosses.. we went over the answers to Thursday nights homework....



We then discussed codominance and incomplete dominance.  Remember... Codominance is when BOTH alleles are expressed equally... they are both dominant and no blending occurs.  Incomplete dominance is when neither is dominant nor recessive... instead, the two phenotypes BLEND together... The problems are done the same way as before except you don't use any lowercase letters.

Homework for monday is to complete the Codominance/Incomplete Dominance Problems... and then go ahead to try the multiple allele and sex linked problems (see the videos on my other posts for help)... so, do UP 39-46 (i think those are the pages! I left my packet at school!)

Video Thoughts?

Did anyone have any thoughts about Friday's film?  I have seen that film many times now, and everytime I watch it I always really admire those 'disease warriors' who worked so tirelessly to bring vaccines to remote parts of the world.  I feel that so many people are only concerned with themselves... to travel to places like India and Africa to try and rid the world of such horrible diseases really says something about those volunteers..  They really made a difference in the world... not everyone can say they have done so.  How amazing would it be to be able to rid the world of HIV like they did with smallpox? What were your thoughts?  Reply to my post with a comment as to what your thoughts or reflections were on the movie.
