Yes!!!! it's Thursday! (: 1 more day/ then weekend!!

In Class: So basically, all we did in class today was:
- get our Enzymes and Digestive Fluids Chart stamped
- went over the chart
- talked about different types of digestions and where they occur - also talked about different fluids and their functions
- continued to work on the Nutrient Lab

Check to make sure your answers are correct for the Enzyme Chart!
(answers will be given going from the "enzyme/fluid name" all the way to the "what results from its action" The words/answers are put in order according to the BLANK spots) (horizontally)


1. Salivary Glands. Starch.
2. Pepsin. Polypeptides
3. Liver. Fats. Smaller Lipids.
4. Pancreatic Amylase. Maltose
5. Stomach Protein. Smaller Polypeptides.
6. Lipase. Fatty acids/glycerol.
7. Duodenum. Glucose.
8. Sucrase. Sucrose.
9. Lactose. Glucose/galactose.
10. Peptidase. Protein.

We also did a little review for our quiz tomorrow. As Mrs. Stein said, "everything from this week is fair game." So be sure to look over all the readings that were assigned and your notes! in other words STUDY! Here are a few questions she asked us......

Q- What is the process of carbohydrate digestion? Where does it occur? What enzymes are involved? What do they get broken into?
A- Starches get digested in the mouth. Amylase br
eaks down starch then into maltose which is TWO sugars, and from that it turns into glucose, which is ONE sugar.

Q- What fluids are found in the stomach/their functions?
A- pepsin: breaks down proteins.
hydrochloric acid: kills bacteria/lowers ph so pepsin works.
Rennin: proteins that work on milk.

Q- What is lipid digestion? What do they get broken down into?
A- Break down into fatty acids/glycerol.
(breaking down is known as emulsification)

Look over diagrams!!!! Know parts and their functions.

Lastly, we worked on the nutrient lab.
Used 2 test tubes and mixed water with Bened
ict's solution in them and then put the tubes in boiling water. Both tubes were light blue before we put them into the water. After a few minutes we noticed a color change. One of the tubes went from being light blue to yellow then green then orange and then finally turned brick red!.

Notes

Ancient Earth
  • Earth is about 4.6 billion years old.
  • Atmosphere was composed of gases: CO2, N2, water vapor, CH4, H2 S. (There was no O2.)
  • Oxygen came from plants.
  • Organisms in the past were aerobic. (didn't use/need oxygen to survive)

First Organic
Molecules
  • 1950's Miller and Urey reproduced conditions of ancient Earth.
  • Electric sparks stimulated lightning.
  • Amino acids began to form.

T-T-T-Tuesday!!! THANKSGIVING BREAK, here we go!

In Class:

We took the DNA/RNA Unit 5 Test, recieved some of our graded papers, and got assigned homework that is due Tuesday, Novemeber 30th the tuesday we get back from break. (;


If you like to get ahead with the homework, then here ya go!
Homework:

- Read section 11.4 and you could choose to do a double bubble map or a flow map.

It's FRIDAY!

In Class:
- Looked over Michael Dillon's AMAZING scribe post and the Star/Wish.
Went over:
- DOD #7; talked about Lyme disease.
- UP 22-25 and Up 28-31.
- Immune System tree map. (Specific Diseases)
- Took notes about Hummoral Immunity, Antibodies, and Immunological Memory.

D.O.D #7; Lyme Disease


Agent of Disease:
bacteria

Facts:

- Vector of Lyme Disease are ticks.
- Bacteria is from the bite.

-If bit by a tick, it is likely to have a rash forming on the side of the bite.

Notes:
Hummoral Immunity

B-Lymphocytes (B-cells) also known as white body cells: recognize antigens which are present on pathogens.
B-cells produce plasma cells and memory B-cells.

Plasma cells release antibodies.
Memory B-cells remember the antigen so antibodies will be produced rapidly next time.


Antigens: markers on a cell's surface that indicate what the cell is about.


Antibodies:
-antibodies bind to antigens
-antibodies mark antigens for destruction by the macrophages
- very specific

- person's body can produce 10 billion antibodies.


Immunological Memory:


2nd exposure is a lot higher and faster because memory B-cells remembered how the antibodies looked in the 1st exposure.

Cell-mediated Immunity

- T-cells attack body cells that are cancerous or infected with viruses.
- Helper t-cells signal(stimulate) killer t-cells and memory b-cells.
- Killer t-cells (cytotoxic) kill infected cells or foreign tissue.

7th Period Class; Ecology. 9/24

In Class:
The day started off normally. We first read the blog from last night and did the "star/wish". After that, we quickly went straight to finishing up our notes on global warming and the ozone layers, which were to be finished up on Thursday, but we got off topic. (: In other words, we are a lot more behind than Mrs. Stein's other STS Bio classes. 20 minutes before the class was over, Mrs. Stein took us to the math computer lab to: help out people who were having trouble uploading their oil spill video onto the blog, and also allowed us to start our homework. (scroll down to see a better description of what the homework was)


Notes: In class, we finished up our Ecology notes that were about Global Warming and Ozone Layers.

These are the rest of the notes of what we took in class on Thursday!

Greenhouse effect: natural situation where heat is trapped by CO2 methane and other gasses.

Mrs. Stein thinks of a Greenhouse effect as like a " blanket wrapped around the earth to keep it warm."

Effects of global warming:

  • Rising of sea level
  • Loss of biodiversity
  • Natural disasters

Ozone Depletion: A layer of O3 gas in the atmosphere.
^ filters harmful UV rays (sunscreen for the earth)^ 1970's scientists found that CFC (chloral floral carbon) caused a hole to form in the ozone layer.^ CFC's were used in aerosol cans and were banned in 1987^ Ozone holes are shrinking


HOMEWORK:
* Alien Poster: is to be printed and handed in on MONDAY in class. (print in color. make it neat, creative, and colorful)

* Blog comments: This was the homework that we were given time to work on in the computer lab. This assignment involves going onto the blog, looking at four or five classmates oil spill videos, and write good, age appropriate comments about them. ( in other words do not just write, "cool video. loved the music". Mrs. Stein wants the comments to include facts about the video. She wants you to prove to her that you've watched the video carefully and paid close attention to what your classmates had to say about their point of view on the oil spill.)

Moodle forum: Log on to moodle. Scroll down on moodle to Unit 2- Ecology. Click on 7th period - Video Response. Answer the two discussion questions asked by Mrs. Stein about global warming. If you do not have enough information about global warming, watch the two videos that go along with this assignment. They are only a couple minutes long.

* Extra Credit: Extra Credit information about The Grove is up on the blog. Check the times and dates in order to go and help out!
