PiGmEnT LaB!!

hey guys soo sorry!haven't really been home but this is what we did in class on thursday, since we were just in the imc on friday.

we started off with taking some notes and learning a

little bit about pigments and light and

photosynthesis.

Light and pigments

-light travels in waves

-different colors have different wavelengths

-white light is a mixture of all colors in the visible spectrum

-a red wavelength is the longest and least energy

-purple wavelength is the shortest and most energy

-plant pigments absorb sunlight

-chlorophyll is the green pigment neede

d for photosynthesis

Photosynthesis

-the reactants are CO2, H2O, light energy

-the products are O2, C6H12O6(glucose)

-TWO reactions:

-Light reaction

-Calvin Cycle(light independent reaction)

Chloroplast structure

-Thylakoid- sacs contain chlorophyll

-Granum- stacks of thylakoids

-light reaction

-Stroma- open space

-Calvin cycle

Next in class we did a lab on UP pages 69-72 about pigments in plants. We rubbed the pigments from two different leaves of plants(spinach and red leaf) onto a piece of filter paper and let it sit in a beaker with 70% isopropyl alcohol for about 15 minutes. After the 15 minutes we observed the paper and the d

ifferent colors that showed up on the paper represented the pigments in the leaves. Here is the key for the types of pigments:

COLOR PIGMENT

Red anthocyanin

Faint Yellow carotenes

Bright Yellow xanthophyll

Yellow green chlorophyll b

Green chlorophyll a

The data my group collected was the spinach leaf had chlorophyll b, chlorophyll a, carotenes, xanthophyll in it, and the red leaf had all of those and also anthocyanin. Here are some pictures of the lab we did.

The homework for thursday night was read 8.2 and 8.3 and do either UP pages 81-85 or a reading strategy of your choice, and also finish the pigment lab and research for your national park(march 23). The homework for the weekend is to read 643 and 664-666. There is no reading strategy but we will need to know this because Ms. Stein will not be lecturing on this. 5 MoRe DaYs Of ScHoOl!!!

Thursdayyy was QUIZZ DAY!! First we handed in our UP pages 67-71 and then we took a quiz on the different genetic crosses. As soon as you finished your quiz you got to work on pages 7-8 in your UP. We used the GBS libguides to help us find information on one genetic disease of our choice. you are supposed to pick one that you have never heard of or that you are very interested in. For anyone that wasn't sure Mrs. Stein suggested Marfan's Syndrome i think, as a good one to look into. Thats all we did in class on thursday but friday was a bio day in the lyceum! The movie we watched was "Dogs and More Dogs." This movie demonstrated how dogs evolved from wolves a long time ago and also shows how people can breed dogs to get the genetic outcome they want, whether it be for showing reasons or racing reasons, or you just wanted your dog to look/act a certain way. Homework for the weekend!!

-read sections 14.3 and 15.2 in your textbook and answer the questions on pages 73, 74 and 79 in your UP

-finish UP 7-8(which we started in class) using the GBS libguides to help you find the information about your genetic disease

ENZYME LAB!!!

In class- In class on October 8th we did the enzyme lab! First off enzymes are proteins that speed up chemical reactions in cells. The enzyme we used in this lab was catalase, which is found in blood cells and also some other cells. Catalase speeds up the break down of hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen.

Enzyme Lab! (pages 24-32 in UP)- In this lab we tested the amount of enzyme activity in different temperatures. You measure the amount of enzyme activity by how high the bubble column is in the test tube. For part A we had to test how the catalase works. You had to set up 3 test tubes with two marks on them. One mark 1 cm from the bottom of the test tube, and one mark 5 cm from the bottom of the test tube. In test tube #1 we put catalase in up to the first mark and hydrogen peroxide up to the second mark. Then you had to measure how high the bubbles rose from the second mark in millimeters. Then we did the same thing with test tubes 2 and 3 but with different contents. Test tube 2 had water to the first mark and hydrogen peroxide to the second, and test tube 3 had catalase to the first mark and sucrose solution to the second, and recorded the height of the bubbles for all of them. Once we knew how the catalase worked we went on to part B. In part B we tested how the catalase worked in different temperatures. Each group was assigned a different temperature and you had to get your water bath to the correct temperature. If you had a hot temperature you heated it up, and if you had a cold temperature you had to put ice cubes in it to cool it down. Then you had to fill the test tube to the first line with catalase and set it in your water bath so the catalase got to the correct temperature. We had to monitor the temperature of the catalase with a thermometer until it was at the given temperature. When it was at the right temperature we put hydrogen peroxide in the test tube up to the second mark and measured how high the bubbles rose. If you had enough time you were supposed to do another trial for more accurate data. Here are some pictures from our lab:

Homework for the weekend-

Enzyme lab pages 26-32 in UP-due tuesday- Finish all of the analysis questions on UP pages 27 and 28 about the enzyme lab we did in class. Some questions and the graph you will not be able to do until Monday because we are collecting class data in class on Monday.

Read 10.1 and 10.2-due tuesday-Read 10.1 and 10.2 in your science textbook and make a flow chart for "The cell cycle." Help on how to do it can be found on moodle on Mrs. Steins' page. Click on October 12th on the little calendar on the right side of the page for information on how to do it. You can also find information on the format of the flow chart on moodle or in your blue reading strategies packet.

Extra credit! There are still some more days to get extra credit at many places:)

REVIEW DAY!!!

IN CLASS: Today in class before we really even started we picked up our graded Lab 58, the worksheet we did while watching "Planet Earth," our rip-o-meter lab write up, the comparison chart we made for section 6.4, and our stamp sheet. Then we talked for a little bit about Yvette's post. After we went over what the homework for tonight is she answered any questions we had about the concepts on our unit packet(pages 1 and 2) or about the test in general. Then, we played a review game of jeopardy covering all of the topics we talked about in our ecology unit. We played girls versus boys and....the girls won!! Yeah girls!!

What should you do for studying..?

-Review objectives from UP pages 1&2

-Review notes

-Review what we read from the textbook

-Go to review sessions in room 374(day before test 3:00pm, day of test 7:00am)

Homework:

1) Video comments and moodle forum-you are supposed to post a detailed comment at least for of our classmates videos and respond to the questions Mrs. Stein posted on moodle. You should read the comments before yours so you can respond to the question and also other peoples posts. This is all due Wednesday.

2) ECOLOGY TEST TOMORROW!!!!!!!! Make sure you study for the test using the tips above.^^ There will also be a review session before school tomorrow in room 374 at 7:00 am if you missed the one after school. If you can't get there at 7:00 it's okay you can still pop in if you have a quick question or want to review for a little bit.

3) Extra Credit! There are various dates to earn extra credit at many places. Mrs. Stein thinks the most fun one is at the Grove(: See the "Extra Credit" post for all of the dates/times/info.
